More than 30,000 American manufacturing jobs in 349 plants across the country are threatened by proposed ordinances to ban and tax plastic bags.
The United States is the world leader in plastic bag and film recycling, providing many green technologies and jobs.
Statement from SPI President & CEO William Carteaux
“Plastic retail carry-out bags are 100% recyclable and made from clean natural gas by American workers. Those interested in reducing litter and protecting the environment would be far better served supporting a reduce, reuse and recycling program rather than a regressive tax on grocery bags. The truth is singling out one product that makes only less than one percent of the U.S. municipal solid waste stream will have no meaningful impact on reducing litter. Instead, it will result in forcing consumers to use products such as reusable bags, which are mostly imported from China, made from foreign oil and are not recyclable.
