SOCIETY OF THE PLASTICS INDUSTRY AND PLASTICS NEWS GLOBAL GROUP TO PRESENT "SUSTAIN 'O8: PLASTICS BUSINESS SUMMIT" WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 2, 2008) – The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) and Plastics News Global Group, publisher of Plastics News, announced today that they have joined forces to co-sponsor “Sustain ’08: Plastics Business Summit,” a landmark sustainability conference for the plastics industry that will be held November 5-7, 2008 in Chicago, Ill. The agreement to stage Sustain ’08 is a significant outcome of SPI’s recent implementation of its sustainability action plan and Plastics News’ decision to make sustainability an editorial priority for 2008-2009. The Sustain ’08 conference will provide plastics company CEOs, sustainability officers, plant managers and others with the expert knowledge and tools they need to view sustainability as a strategy toward reducing costs, eliminating waste, maximizing profitability and increasing market share and longevity. “As our industry faces increasing consumer and customer demand to tweak product lines and change operations in order to be more sustainable, I am excited by the insights this ‘C-Level’ event will provide attendees into why sustainable practices are a sound business decision and how to get started with implementation,” said SPI President and CEO William R. Carteaux. “Given the abundance of industry knowledge and event management experience that SPI and our partner, Crain’s Plastics News Global Group, bring to the table, I am confident that attendees will leave Sustain ’08 better equipped to turn sustainability challenges into financial opportunities.” “We’re pleased to be able to work with SPI on this event,” said Tony Eagan, vice president and group publisher of Plastics News Global Group. “This topic is not a fad. Sustainability is the lifeblood of plastics manufacturing going forward. Our coverage of the topic has steadily increased in recent months, and now the industry needs an event where people can learn more, become more aware of issues and opinions, and reach some consensus on how plastics processing can be sustainable.” Kicking off with a welcome reception the evening of November 5th, the conference will present two days of keynote addresses, panel discussions and networking opportunities featuring leading corporate sustainability experts speaking from a variety of perspectives. Representatives from companies up and down the plastics industry vertical market will discuss how they changed their company’s business culture in order to implement innovations in areas ranging from product design, recycling and materials recovery to energy efficiency, worker training and environmental management system certification. Other conference topics will include legal and regulatory implications, marketing challenges, “greenwashing” and how the media evaluate a company’s sustainability practices. Program details and registration information for “Sustain ’08: Plastics Business Summit” will be made available in mid-June via both organizations’ Web sites (see below), Plastics News and other distribution channels. # # # Founded in 1937, The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc., is the trade association representing one of the largest manufacturing industries in the United States.
