Standards

The following is a partial list of organizations that have issued guidelines, publications or standards relating to degradable plastics:

ASTM

BioDegradability Products Institute

CEN - European Committee for Standardization

International Organization for Standardization

U.S. Composting Council

These standards focus on a variety of areas including standard specifications for compostable plastics; test methods for determining biodegradability; requirements for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation; determination of the degree of disintegration of plastic materials under defined composting conditions in a pilot-scale test certifying; and, identifying plastic products that will biodegrade and compost satisfactorily in actively managed compost facilities.
