The following statement has been issued by Matt Seaholm, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s swift veto of California AB 2784, which would mandate the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) content in plastic thermoform containers:
“We appreciate the action taken by Governor Newsom to veto AB 2784. Governor Newsom rightly points out in his veto message that AB 2784 would have caused confusing laws following the passage of SB54 earlier this year.
“Our industry encourages policy that promotes a responsible, circular economy. While we support reasonable recycled content requirements where they make sense, thermoform to thermoform recycling, in the manner mandated by AB 2784, does not,” concluded Seaholm.
The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) is the only organization that supports the entire plastics supply chain, representing nearly one million workers in the $468 billion U.S. industry. Since 1937, PLASTICS has been working to make its members and the industry more globally competitive while advancing recycling and sustainability through education initiatives, industry-leading insights and events, networking opportunities and policy advocacy, including the largest plastics trade show in the Americas, NPE2024: The Plastics Show.
