Chris Polito began his career at Milliken & Company in Chemical R&D, conducting synthetic research for the Plastic Additives division. After two years, he transitioned into a customer-facing role as an Account Manager, building relationships and driving growth. Today, he continues to make a lasting impact in the plastics industry.
At Milliken & Company, Chris helps customers find the right plastic additive solutions by combining technical expertise with industry insight. He manages relationships with converters, compounders, and recyclers while working closely with R&D to develop innovative products. His role includes customer meetings, market analysis, and strategic planning to drive business growth.
Chris has been actively engaged in the plastics industry through his participation in FLiP (Future Leaders in Plastics). His involvement has provided invaluable mentorship, industry networking, and career growth opportunities. Wade Stockton from Printpack has been a key mentor, offering guidance on sales strategies, career planning, and navigating complex industry issues. Conversations within FLiP have given Chris new insights and boosted his confidence in shaping his career path.
For young professionals considering a career in plastics, Chris shares this:
“A career in plastics offers the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the world. From advancing medical technology to enhancing sustainability through lightweight materials, the industry is at the forefront of innovation. For those interested in problem-solving and making a difference, the plastics sector provides a dynamic environment where you can shape the future of materials science and contribute to sustainable solutions.”
Chris has been involved in FLiP for over a year, participating in mentorship programs, industry networking events, and book clubs centered on career growth. These experiences have expanded his knowledge, connected him with industry peers, and deepened his understanding of industry trends and best practices. Engaging in FLiP has helped him step outside of his polyolefin bubble to learn more about other polymers and the broader plastics industry.
Chris sees a major challenge for the plastics industry being the negative perception of plastic waste. Addressing end-of-life solutions through improved recycling and responsible consumption is key, as initiatives like PLASTICS’ Recycling is Real campaign show. Industry leaders must also continue educating the public on plastics’ benefits while working towards more sustainable solutions.
“While plastics offer countless benefits, addressing end-of-life solutions is crucial. This challenge can be met through collaborative efforts focused on improving recycling infrastructure and promoting responsible consumption.”
Chris has found his work in plastics to be both dynamic and rewarding. Every day presents new challenges and opportunities to innovate. Working closely with customers to develop solutions tailored to their needs is incredibly satisfying, and the collaborative nature of the industry allows him to engage with professionals across multiple disciplines. Through his career, he continues to learn, grow, and contribute to the evolving landscape of the plastics industry.
When asked what plastic product he couldn’t live without, Chris replied: “My credit card—because plastic money makes retail therapy all too easy.”
PLASTICS and the Future Leaders in Plastics (FLiP) Committee are devoted to supporting and encouraging the next generation of plastics leaders who will play a crucial role in the innovation, technology and future of the plastics industry. FLiP’s mission is to provide young professionals under the age of 40 the exposure, education and resources they need to build lifelong careers in plastics. Want to join?
